North Mahaska did little to damage its No. 8 state ranking Jan. 7 using a strong inside-outside game meshed with a tenacious defense to double up Belle Plaine 63-30.
Senior post player Layla Hargis battled for 22 points and 21 rebounds to go along with three steals and two blocks to dominate the paint. Freshman guards Breckyn Schilling and Kaitlyn VanDonselaar combined for eight 3-pointers including a run of five in a row in the second quarter. Schilling finished with 20 points and VanDonselaar had 12.
North Mahaska, 9-1, outrebounded Belle Plaine 39-18.
