Warhawks Second in Team Race
North Mahaska found themselves in a highly competitive wrestling invitational Saturday. The Warhawks used a pair of firsts and seconds to finish second in the team race. Solon won the team title with 211.5 points and NM was second with 190.5. to outdistance Grinnell in the 14-team meet.
North Mahaska picked up titles at 106 pounds and 145 then added runnerup a spot at 170 and three third place finishes.
Ryan Groom took the 106 pound crown with a pin of Sam Nelson of Oskaloosa in 1 minute 32 seconds. In the finals he pinned North Tama’s Maxon Monat in 55 seconds.
Paul DeJong captured the 145-pound title with a solid day. He opened the day with a technical fall over Oskaloosa’s Luke Abrahamson 18-3. In the quarterfinals DeJong took just 37 seconds to pin Iowa City City High’s James Tilley. He scored a 6-3 decision over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Nathan Curry 6-3. He faced Solon’s Teague Williams in the finals an scored a 10-3 decision to stand atop the podium.
Wyatt Van Weelden powered his way to a runnerup spot at 170. He pinned his way into the finals. He pinned Jesse Hendershott off Iowa City City High in 1:23. Cayne Hall of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont was Van Weelden’s victim in the quarterfinals with a pin in 2:36. Van Weelden pinned Solon’s Kyler Jensen in 1:44. Callyn Bishop from Baxter scored a major decision over Van Weelden 12-3.
Gage Reis at 138, Change Angle at 160 and Trace Goemaat at 285 captured third.
