Two Mahaska County teams ranked by the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union met Monday. No. 4 in Class 2A Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont kept its perfect season going by posting a 67-56 win over No. 11 in Class 1A North Mahaska.
EBF, 20-0, led most of the way, but North Mahaska, 17-3, was within a couple baskets at halftime trailing 41-35. The visiting Rockets exploded out of the blocks in the third quarter outscoring North Mahaska 14-6. NM won the final period 15-12 but could not overcome the deficit.
The difference in the game was shooting efficiency as EBF shot a blistering 50.9 percent from the floor and hit seven 3-point shots. Whitney Klyn and Katie Shafer each blocked three shots on the defensive end. North Mahaska shot 32.8 percent from the floor and hit six treys. Molly Shafer led the Rockets with 17 points, Allya Wagamon added 16, Klyn 15 and Ava Eastlick 13.
Breckyn Schilling led North Mahaska with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Regan Grewe added 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block. Libby Hargis just missed doubles with nine points and nine rebounds, four steals and two assists. Sydney Andersen chipped in six points.
North Mahaska opens Class 1A regional play Thursday when they host Tri-County at 7 p.m.
