Mrs. Miranda Johnson received 2 grants for her Ag classroom:
Grant #1
Name/Organization which provided the grant: Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation
Grant total: $250
What will grant funding be used to purchase?
We will be purchasing equipment to increase the population of monarch butterflies. We will be raising butterflies in the classroom, tagging them, and releasing them in our pollination garden and will be able to track them as they migrate.
How will this positively impact NM students and your program?
This project will help educate the students about the importance of pollinators and why they are beneficial in the agricultural world. It will help teach students how to keep accurate data and complete needed research.
Grant #2
Name/Organization which provided the grant: Living to Serve Grant
Grant total: $1,200
What will grant funding be used to purchase?
We will be purchasing two beehives and needed equipment to operate the hives in which students will plant a pollination garden, extract honey, collect data, and research on hives.
How will this positively impact NM students and your program?
This will positively impact my program by diversifying agricultural production, showing students the importance of bees/pollinators and allowing a few students to use this as their Supervised Agricultural Experience project. It will also be used as “hands-on” experience in my Agri-Science and Natural Resource classes.
