This week begins postseason competition for football, volleyball and cross country at North Mahaska. Volleyball and cross country will compete in the South Iowa Cedar League meets while football hosts the first round of Class A playoffs on Friday.
Volleyball plays in the SICL tourney Monday, Oct. 12 against Tri-County at a pod in Belle Plaine. The winner faces Belle Plaine, who recently dropped out of the state rankings with the winner advancing to the conference Gold Quad on Tuesday. The runnerup advances to the Silver Quad and the third team moves to the Bronze Quad.
The volleyball team begins Class 1A state tourney qualification on Monday, Oct. 19 with a match at Twin Cedars. The winner will face the winner of the match between No. 13 WACO and Sigourney at WACO on Oct. 21.
Cross country will end the regular season with the conference meet at Lynnville-Sully on Tuesday, Oct. 13. They compete in Ottumwa at Wildwood Park in a district hosted by Pekin on Oct. 22. The top three teams and the first 15 individual place winners advance to the state meet on Oct. 31.
Friday’s football game with Nodaway Valley is the first playoff appearance for North Mahaska since 2009 and the first for coach Phil Griffin. It will be the first meeting of the two schools on the gridiron. The winner will advance to the second round of the payoffs against the winner of the Wayne-Earlham contest.
