A pair of North Mahaska basketball players ripped the cords for their respective teams as North Mahaska swept South Iowa Cedar League foe Colfax-Mingo Friday night. The girls won 56-30 while the boys picked up a 77-51 win.

Junior Layla Hargis poured in 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the 13th-ranked NM girls. Most of Hargis’s points came off second chance opportunities. Fellow junior Addie Schilling finished with 15 points and eight boards. Kaitlyn VanDonselaar and Maddie McKay each scored six points. Schilling’s effort included seven assists, three steals and a block. VanDonselaar was credited with five steals. Breanna Fogle and Hargis each recorded a block.

North Mahaska forced 21 Tigerhawk turnovers. Unofficially, VanDonselaar was credited with five steals and Schilling had four.

The game was slow developing with NM leading 11-10 after one period but pulled away by halftime 25-18. NM turned the ball over 15 times.

Carley Underwood led Colfax-Mingo in scoring with 16 points and Abigayle Rawlins had 10. One upside for the Tigerhawks was a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. North Mahaska shot 8-of-13.

North Mahaska improved to 11-2 overall and 10-2 in league play. They host Sigourney on Monday, BGM on Tuesday, Tri-County on Thursday and English Valleys on Friday. They are scheduled to close out the regular season at home against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Monday, Feb. 8.

Bollman Powers Warhawks
North Mahaska used a big second half run powered by 3-pointers as the Warhawks rushed past Colfax-Mongo Friday, 77-51. North Mahaska used a 25-9 second quarter to break a 13-13 tie, then used an 18-0 run to start the third quarter to cruise to the victory.

William Penn recruit Addie Bollman three of his eight treys during the third period run. Nash Smith and Lane Harmon each added a trey and Harmon added a deuce. Jake Nichols’ 3-pointer stopped the run with 4 minutes 15 seconds left in the third period.

Bollman finished with 24 points. Dylan Klinker was one of the other Warhawks in double figures with 10. Smith finished with 15, Braden Steel had eight and Harmon finished with 10. Blake Readshaw chipped in five.

Steel and Smith led the rebounding with 12 and nine respectively.

Zach Steenhoek led Colfax-Mingo with 18 points followed by Curtis Horras with 11 and Jake Nichols with 10.

North Mahaska (12-3, 11-2) hosts Sigourney in a makeup game on Monday, hosts BGM Tuesday, Tri-County Thursday and English Valleys on Friday. They will wrap up the regular season against EBF on Feb. 8 and a makeup game with Lynnville-Sully on Feb. 12.
