North Mahaska’s baseball and softball teams hit the road June 2 to take on Montezuma in South Iowa Cedar League play. North Mahaska won the girl’s game 11-6 and the boys fell 9-3.
North Mahaska was able to take advantage of 14 hits and seven Monte miscues in the girl’s game. Junior Zoe Deucore just missed hitting the cycle. She hit all but a double including a solo homerun. Eighth grader Regan Grewe drove in three runs on a single and two doubles.
Each team scored a run in the opening inning then NM scored five in the top of the second for a 6-1 lead. Monte answered with two then added three in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. North Mahaska tallied three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh and held the Bravettes scoreless.
Senior Madison McKay and junior Morgan Hudson combined for the pitching win. McKay went four innings allowing three runs on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Hudson gave up three runs on six hits and a walk. She struck out three.
McKay had a triple and drove in two runs. Deucore, McKay, eighth grader Cali Sampson and Hudson each stole a base.
Katie Reynolds led the Bravettes with two singles and a double to drive in three runs. Kallie Robison took the loss allowing 11 runs on 14 hits. She struck out eight.
In the boy’s game, NM led 1-0 before Monte scored multiple runs in the third, fourth and fifth to take control of the game. Senior Ty Kelderman and junior Sam Terpstra hit doubles and senior Blake Readshaw hit a pair of singles.
Dodge Duke, a junior, took the loss going 3 2/3 innings. He was credited with seven runs on eight hits and five walks. He fanned three. Sophomore Nash Smith worked 2 1.3 with two runs on three hits, a walk and five strikeouts.
North Mahaska teams host BGM Friday at 6 p.m. On Saturday the girls play in Oskaloosa while the boys go to Eddyville.
