With the season nearing its midway point, North Mahaska teams are still in the hunt for the title in the South Iowa Cedar League baseball and softball races. North Mahaska baseball is currently in third place at 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the SICL. Sigourney (10-1,7-0) and Lynnville-Sully (9-5, 7-1 league the standings through eight games.

Softball team is in a strong fight with an SICL mark of 5-3 and 6-7 overall. L-S and Sigourney are both ranked in the top 10 in Class 1A. This past week NM also faced Class 3A fifth-ranked Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Grinnell, who was ranked 13th in Class 4A at the time.

L-S leads the league with a 13-4 mark and 8-0 in league play. Sigourney is second (11-6, 6-1) followed by Belle Plaine (10-8, 6-2); Colfax-Mingo (8-9, 6-2); English Valleys (8-5, 6-2); and BGM (6-8, 4-4).

On the baseball side of the ledger, Sam Terpstra ranks fifth in the league batting with a .474 average, He has collected 18 hits including seven doubles and has driven in seven runs. Blake Readshaw has a .422 average also with seven doubles and 12 singles. He also ranks sixth in stolen bases taking 11-of-12.

Nash Smith is third in the league in stolen bases at 13-for-13 attempts. Defensively, Dylan Klinker ranks fourth in the ICL in putouts with 60. On the mound Readshaw has a 3-1 mark and 1.68 earned run average, which ranks him 12th.

Zoe Deucore leads NM in hitting and is sixth in the league with a .455 average and is third in the league in homeruns with five. She has hit 13 singles and eight doubles. Eighth grader Regan Grewe ranks eighth with an average of .447 with three homers, four doubles and 14 singles. She is 13th in the SICL in runs scored with 13 and has stolen nine bases.

Madison McKay is fourth in pitching with a 5-6 mark and 2.66 ERA. She has tossed 71 innings this season.

North Mahaska boys and girls hosted Keota Wednesday and travel to English Valleys Friday. The girls host Pleasantville and Twin cedars Saturday in a round-robin tourney.
