North Mahaska boys’ cross country team continued to impress winning the South Iowa Cedar League meet hosted by Montezuma Tuesday with 30 points to easily outdistance the field. English Valleys was second with 72 points. North Mahaska placed all five runners 4-8 to secure the title. Montezuma girls took the team title with 23 points over Lynnville-Sully with 39.
English Valleys’ Bryson Grove, who is ranked 16th in Class 1A, was the boy’s champion finishing in 17 Minutes 36.29 seconds. His teammate Gage Heyne ran third in 18:37.70. The next three runners were 20th and beyond.
North Mahaska’s Lane Harmon, a state qualifier from 2020, placed fourth in 18:57.05. Harmon was followed by Brayden Veiseth 19:20.73, Anthony Goemaat 19:22.80, Nate Sampson 19:27.95, and Asher DeBoef 19:28.24 to seal up the win.
Also running for the Warhawks were Ben Yang 20:38.63, Andy Knockel 20:41.44, Kincaid Mitchell 21.41.82 and Garrett Lamb 23:10.55.
Scoring for second [place English Valleys were Caleb Garringer in 20th, 21:37.82; Governor Lightfoot 22nd in 22:03.15; and Jonathyn Downing, 27th in 23:02.29. A.J. Bruns was 28th in 23:03.44.
Tri-County’s AJ Staley was 50th in 26:41.68 and Dillon Kapple placed 52nd in 33:51.19.
Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully won the girl’s meet in 21:36.57. Sigourney’s Reanah Utterback placed in the top 10 with a seventh in 24:19.64. Breckyn Shilling was the lone female runner for North Mahaska placing 30th in 29:49.31. Maddie Koehn of English Valleys placed 16th in 26:25.89 and teammate Nevaeh Briggs was 26th in 28:16.17. Grayce Williams was 23rd for Tri-County finishing in 26:25.89 and Tessa Fisher placed 42nd with a time of 36:38.32.
All teams will compete in the state qualifier next week at Pekin (NM) or Iowa City Regina (EV, TC and Sigourney).
