North Mahaska’s wrestlers matched up with two South Iowa Cedar League teams and Class 3A Mount Pleasant at Marengo Iowa Valley Thursday going 2-1 on the night. The Warhawks defeated Iowa Valley 51-27 and rolled past Mount Pleasant 72-6. They battled Sigourney to a 40-36 loss.
NM coach Ryan Groom was pleased overall with the team’s performance.
“Everything we are working on the mat is implemented in matches,” said Groom. “We are wrestling with much more mental toughness and grit.
“We had some matches (Sigourney) that could have gone the other way. P.J. was doing well against Reid (Molyneux), who is a really good wrestler. Had any of those matches gone the other way we win.”
Joel DeJong at 113, Hunter Wernli at 132, Paul DeJong at 145 and Trace Goemaat at 285 finished 3-0 on the night. DeJong pinned Carter Hassebroek of IV in 1 minute 57 seconds and Landon Beckler of MP in 1:44 before securing a forfeit against Sigourney. DeJong pinned D.J. Hammes of Sigourney in 5:07 and IV’s
Owen Bral in 1:34. In the MP match he decisioned Bowen Davis 7-3.
Wernli pinned Jeffrey Crawford of Iowa Valley in 5:38 and decisioned Mount Pleasant’s Ramzy Davis 8-4. He garnered a forfeit against Sigourney.
Goemaat decisioned Garrett Hoyt of Iowa Valley 6-0 and pinned Sigourney’s Zach Guffey in 25 seconds. Mount Pleasant did not have a wrestler at the top weight giving Goemaat a win by forfeit.
Charlie Goemaat at 120 picked up a pair of forfeits to finish undefeated on the night. Ryan Groom pinned Sawyer Fulton of MP at 106 pounds in 1:39 and Iowa Valley’s Robert Olson in 2:44 for two wins. Gage Reis also picked up a pair of wins at 138 pinning Avalos Ramirez of MP in 1:45 and Sigourney’s Landon Crow at the end of the first period.
Peter Stout took less than a minute (:59) to dispose of Mount Pleasant’s Jaxsen Stueker then stuck Karter Thiessen of Iowa Valley in 1:43. He faced a tough match in Sigourney’s Reid Molyneux losing by fall.
Wyatt Van Weelden pinned Christian Ossman-Falline (MP) in 1:00 and took a forfeit against Iowa Valley. Jakob Clark pinned Iowa Valley’s Dawson Smith in 2:50 and picked up a forfeit against Mount Pleasant.
Libby Groom had the lone female match of the night falling to Breann Peach of Iowa Valley in 2:43.
North Mahaska hosts its invitational Saturday.
