North Mahaska had a solid night of wrestling at the BGM Duals Friday. Competing against two Class 2A schools and two 3A schools in addition to BGM, only Class 3A North Scott got the best of the Warhawks.

North Mahaska defeated BGM 60-23, Tipton 37-34, Gilbert 39-31 and Des Moines Hoover 54-30. North Scott got the best of the Warhawks 49-28.

Ryan Groom at 106 and Hunter Wernli at 132/138 went 5-0 on the night. Groom picked up pins of Dennis May of Gilbert in 1 minute 3 seconds and Jayson Johnson of Tipton in 2:37. He picked up three forfeits.

At 132, Wernli pinned Tipton’s Gavin Roth in 3:05, Evan Kruse of North Scott in 4:00 and Holt Belton of Gilbert in 45 seconds. He also received a forfeit. He jumped up to 138 against BGM and earned a forfeit.

Gage Reis went 4-1 on the day at 138 and 145. He pinned Ashton Kalinay of BGM in 1:18 at 145. At 138 he pinned Andres Martinez-Cruz of Des Moines North-Hoover in 47 seconds, Josh Pepper of Gilbert in 3:13 and North Scott’s Bennett Hamerlinck in 3:27.

Wyatt Van Weelden also went 4-1 on the day at 170 pounds. He scored a 6-1 decision over Tipton’s Aiden Graves and a 16-2 major decision over North Scott’s Jackson Stevenson. He earned a pin over Des Moines Hoover-North’s Cody Jackson then gained a forfeit.

Trace Goemaat also went 4-1 on the day at 285. He pinned BGM’s Camren Cooling in 14 seconds and pinned Des Moines Hoover-North’s Jose Benitez in 37 seconds and picked up a pair of forfeits.

Joel DeJong pinned Cole Bruck of North Scott at 113 in 5:04 at 113 pounds, scored a decision over Gilbert’s John Artz 7-2 and pinned Gavin Sorgenfrey of Tipton in 3:47. Charlie Goemaat won a major decision at 120 pounds over Tipton’s

Michael Puffer 12-4. He added a pin of Gilbert’s Corbin Bents in 1:48 and Eh Na of DM North-Hoover in 1:45.

Dylan Meland went 3-2 on the day with a pair of pins at 132/126. At 132 he pinned Preston Mann of BGM in 3:14. At 126, Meland pinned Tipton’s Wyatt Ham in 3:30 and picked up a forfeit.

Max Reed and Will Goemaat each picked up a pair of wins at the meet. North Mahaska finished second as a team overall. North Scott won all five duals.
