North Mahaska battled with HLV Friday and came away with an 87-61 victory over the Warriors. The win also put the Warhawks in a tie for the South Iowa Cedar League lead after Montezuma upset Lynnville-Sully. Both teams sit at 12-1 in the standings.
Lane Harmon and Nash Smith scored 24 and 23 respectively to lead North Mahaska. Smith and Braden Steel scored a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Just to finish the night he added two steals and a blocked shot.
North Mahaska (14-2, 12-1) opened the game with a 19-13 run and led 40-27 by halftime. Just to keep the ball rolling NM outscored the Warriors 29-18 in the third.
Harmon finished the night adding seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Smith had four assists, two steals and a block. Nolan Andersen finished in double figures scoring with 10 points. Nate Sampson came off the bench to score eight.
HLV had three players reach double figures. Landon Hall led with 18 followed by Peyton Roth with 13 and Zander McCulley with 10.
North Mahaska and HLV both shot well from the field. NM was 36-of-59 for 61 percent while HLV went 27-for-54 for 50 percent. NM shot 10-of-19 from the foul line. HLV went to the line three teams with no makes.
North Mahaska has a busy schedule this week. They host BGM Tuesday then goes to No. 8 Lynnville-Sully Friday. They host No. 4 Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Saturday and hosts Montezuma on Jan. 31.
