North Mahaska split a pair of games at the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont baseball tourney Saturday. The Warhawks defeated Pekin 12-5 then fell to Pella Christian 15-5.
Pekin held a 2-1 after two innings then NM scored four runs in the top of the third inning. Pekin answered with two more to trail by one run. NM added five in the fifth, one in the sixth and the seventh to seal the victory.
North Mahaska outhit the Panthers 9-5. Jack Kelderman rapped a pair of singles to drive in two runs and Ben Johannes hit two singles with an RBI. Nate Sampson had a pair of RBIs on a single and a double, and Drake Hall doubled and Nash Smith singled.
Jaxon Van Der Veer picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed a run on one hit three walks with a strikeout. Kelderman opened the game going 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits, two walks, a hit batsman and fanned two.
Pella Christian scored three runs in each of the first three innings and limited NM to three in the first and another in the third. The Warhawks closed the gap to 9-5 after four innings but the Eagles scored a run in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Johannes had a single and a double to account for half of NM’s hits. Sampson and Kelderman each singled.
Four Warhawks took to the mound. Sampson allowed six runs on five hits, five walks and a hit batsman. Lucas Nunnikhoven allowed five runs on two hits with five walks and a hit batsman. Hall allowed three runs on three walks and Carson Doak gave up a run on two hits, a walk and hit batsman.
North Mahaska, 5-5 played at Keota Monday.
