North Mahaska took its wrestling team to Lynnville-Sully Thursday and came away with three wins in South Iowa cedar League competition. The Warhawks defeated Colfax-Mingo 48-22, Belle Plaine 45-33 and Lynnville-Sully 52-18. NM had 13-of-15 wrestlers record at least one pin.

Four matmen, Ryan Groom at 132 pounds, Dawson DeBoef at 150, Chris Long at 175 and Chance Angle at 190, went 3-0 on the night. DeBoef, Long and Angle recorded two pins each. Long had two dramatic wins winning on a pin after looking like he may succumb to a decision.

In his opening match with Colfax-Mingo’s Isaiah Baucom he secured the pin in 2 minutes 37 seconds. Against Belle Plaine, Gaberial Kaplan was the victim in 3:34.

Thursday’s wins brought great praise from coach Ryan Groom.

Ryan Groom works on Lynnville-Sully’s Kendric Johnson en route to a 14-0 major decision.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am because of how we responded to the first dual meet,” said Groom. “Typically, we have come out flat for the second set of duals. Tonight, we came out on fire.

“As for Chris it goes to show that you are never out of a match. We preach over and over that we need to win the matches we are not supposed to win.”

DeBoef pinned C-M’s Sullivan Wilkins in 1:36 and Belle Plaine’s Parker Weeds in 3:01. Groom pinned Belle Plaine’s Peyton Weeds in 2:15 and went the distance scoring a major decision over Lynnville-Sully’s Kendric Johnson, 14-0.

Angle dumped Allan Bregar of C-M in 1:19 and pinned Wyatt Mathis of Lynnville-Sully in 1:55.

Austin McMahan lost a tough match in his opener with Donovan Baucom of Colfax-Mingo at 215. The two were scrapping when Baucom made a move and caught McMahan off guard for a pin. McMahan followed the loss up with a 7-4 decision over Belle Plaine’s Jaden Beal and earned a forfeit against L-S.

North Mahaska’s Chris Long locks up with Isaiah Baucom of Colfax-Mingo at the Lynnville-Sully quadrangular Thursday. Long scored to help NM win the match 48-22.

“I saw some real leadership out of Austin during that match,” said coach Groom. “He decided to take a tough situation and learn from it. I know he was not happy. but he handed it very well.”

North Mahaska gave up points in the lower three weights, 106, 113 and 120 with no wrestlers competing, but had a solid night anyway.

“Even some losses that we took tonight we did a nice job moving forward,” said Groom. “All I can say is ‘let’s go Warhawks.’ We have a couple kids moving up to help the team out. That is a testament to their character and willingness to put themselves out there.”
