North Mahaska crowned two champions and a pair of runnerups to score 155 points to place fourth. Three of the top two finishes came in the lower weights. Joel DeJong at 126 and Ryan Groom at 132 took the top spots on the podium in their respective weight classes. Charlie Goemaat at 120 and Max Reed at 175 placed second.
Iowa Valley outdistanced Belle Plaine and BGM for first. The Tigers amassed 172 points with BP in second at 159 edging BGM by a half point. BGM scored 158.5.
DeJong opened the tournament with a pin of Montezuma’s Conner Smith in 42 seconds. In his semifinal match, DeJong went into the final minute of the match before pinning James Cherveny of Colfax-Mingo in 5:39. Kimball Elliott of Lynnville-Sully battled DeJong, but the North Mahaska wrestler scored a 13-5 major decision for the crown.
Groom (35-2) came into the meet as the top seed and lived up to that billing in the seven-wrestler bracket. The seeding allowed Groom two byes to reach the title bout. He met Brady Clark of Sigourney-Keota and pinned him in 5 minutes.
Goemaat was the two seed and had an opening round bye. He scored a major decision over Belle Plaine’s Hayden Neuhaus 11-3 to reach the finals against Cason Fitch of Colfax Mingo. Fitch scored a 6-2 decision for the title.
Reed wasted little time in his opener pinning Tate Carson of Colfax-Mingo in 21 seconds. Landon Cooling of BGM was the next victim. In the finals Iowa Valleys’ Colton Hudepohl scored a 17-9 major decision to give Reed second.
Austin McMahan picked up the lone third place finish for the Warhawks. The senior 190 pounder decisioned Reed Slater of BGM 10-3. McMahan faced top seed Taite Peach of Iowa Valley and fell in 5:19. McMahan pinned Colfax-Mingo’s Allan Brager in 1:42 and decisioned Sigourney-Keota’s Owen Menke 7-5 for third.
North Mahaska added three fourths. Cole Wernli picked up one at 138 pounds. Wernli had an opening round bye then was pinned by Aidan Timm of Belle Plaine. On the back side of the bracket Wernli decisioned Landyn Ankum of HLV 5-3 and faced Preston Mann of BGM, who scored a major decision 10-2 giving Wernli fourth.
Hunter Wernli at 144 pounds also earned fourth. He decisioned Lane Chvala of Iowa Valley 13-6. In the semifinals BGM’s Landon Pierce scored an 8-6 decision to send Wernli to the consolations. A bye put Wernli into the third place match. Wernli met Chvala again and came up short 10-5.
Chance Angle picked up the final fourth place at 215. He opened with a 9-5 decision of Dawson Smith of Iowa Valley then was pinned by HLV’s Cole Fontinel in 3:06. Angle pinned Nathan Endersbe of Colfax-Mingo in 1:56. Montezuma’s Braxton Plants scored a fall over Angle in 53 seconds.
The final placewinner was at b165 when freshman Dallas Langman placed sixth. The freshman lost his opener to Ian Smith of Iowa Valley with a fall in 1:27. Langman faced Montezuma’s Evan Haughey in the consolation and scored a fall in 5:28. Belle Plaine’s Derek Kressley pinned Langman in 5:28. In the fifth place match , Ashton Schwab of Sigourney-Keota pinned him in 1:47.
North Mahaska will be preparing for districts, which will be held on Feb. 10.
