North Mahaska outlasted winds in excess of 35 miles per hour, wind chills in the low 40s and English Valleys and Lynnville-Sully golfers to score a South Iowa Cedar League win Thursday. All four NM girls placed in the top seven with Aly Steil earning medalist honors with a 45.
Only Lynnville-Sully and North Mahaska scored as a team. The Warhawks shot a 219 while Lynnville-Sully finished at 260. English Valleys’ Nichole Murphy shot a 53 for runnerup medalist honors.
“I am super excited how they played today,” said NM coach Al Hodgeman. “None of these have played in meets before so to come out and play like this is great. They have a great future if they will continue to play.”
Steil was followed by Avary Westercamp with a 55, Eli Westercamp 58 and Lacey Campbell carded a 61. North Mahaska’s quartet finished first, fourth, fifth and seventh overall.
Behind Murphy was Jaidyn Rugg with a 54 and Sarah Fredricks with a 67. Rugg’s score was good enough for third.
Renzi Ingersoll paced the Hawks with a 58 followed by Olivia Beyer, 63; Brooke Hardeman 64; and Audrey Kaldenburg 75.
Steil was certainly pleased with her performance.
“I really wanted to shoot under 50 if I could,” said Steil. “I wasn’t sure with the wind. We all finished in the top 10 so that’s a good start.”
The girls will be I action again next Thursday and Friday when they travel to Keota and Iowa Valley. Thursday meet at Lagos Golf Club will be a four-team meet while the Iowa Valley meet will be a larger team event.
