North Mahaska’s baseball team picked up an 8-2 victory while a seventh inning rally sunk the softball team 7-6 Friday night.
Jack Kelderman struck out seven Montezuma batters and hit a single and double to drive in a run to aid his own cause. Kelderman, a junior, scattered four hits and hit one batter in six innings of work. Senior Nolan Andersen tossed the final frame with two strikeouts, a walk and hit batsman. Andersen had a productive night at bat with two singles, a double and two RBI. Ryan Groom and Lucas Nunnikhoven also doubled.
On the softball diamond North Mahaska was clinging to a 6-5 lead as the teams entered the bottom of the seventh. The visiting Warhawks had held the Bravettes scores through the first four innings. Montezuma took advantage of hits to score five times in the bottom of the fifth to chase starting pitcher Jocelyn Pinkerton from the game and take the lead 5-4.
Junior Regan Grewe came into the game. She got the Warhawks out of the fifth inning and held the Bravettes scoreless in the sixth. North Mahaska scored twice in the seventh to take the lead, but Monte was able to answer in the bottom of the last inning.
Grewe took the loss allowing two runs on two hits. She struck out one batter.
Grewe led the NM hitting with a single and homerun with one RBI. Kaylia Shipman doubled with an RBI and Olivia Ridgeway singled with an RBI. Kayla Readshaw tripled and Madeline Doonan doubled for the Warhawks.
Montezuma was led at the plate by Madison Van Zee and Kamryn Schmidt with two singles apiece.
North Mahaska’s baseball and softball teams will face three South Iowa Cedar League foes this week. They host HLV Monday, Lynnville-Sully Wednesday and BGM on Friday. All games are at 5:30 p.m. The baseball team will play in a tourney at Moravia on Saturday.
