North Mahaska’s basketball teams hit the road Monday to face nonconference foe Woodward-Granger and came away with a split. The No. 2 girls won 66-39 while the boys were edged 59-56.
North Mahaska (15-2) jumped out to a 16-2 lead after one quarter and 31-10 by halftime. The Warhawks collected 28 steals from Woodward-Granger (10-7) but they also turned the ball over 22 times themselves.
Seniors Regan Grewe and Breckyn Schilling led North Mahaska with impressive lines. Grewe scored 21 points with seven rebounds and six steals. Schilling put up 20 points with six rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block. Aly Steil led in steals with six. Sydney Andersen scored six points and three assists. The Warhawks grabbed 28 rebounds including 12 on the offensive end. They doled out 18 assists.
In the boys contest, North Mahaska (14-3) was held to single digit scoring in the middle two quarters. The Hawks led North Mahaska 17-16 after one period and worked their way to a 44-33 lead entering the final period. North Mahaska’s rally fell short.
Gabe Hora led North Mahaska in scoring with 16 points. Adrian Smith scored 13 points. He added nine rebounds and two steals. Asher DeBoef scored a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He doled out three assists. Lucas Nunnikhoven scored nine points. Jack Kelderman grabbed seven rebounds.
The Warhawks turned the ball over 14 times but recorded just seven steals. They shot 34.5 percent from the floor and went 10-for-14 from the foul line.
North Mahaska will travel to HLV Tuesday then will host Lynnville-Sully Friday to close out the conference season. No stats were available for Woodward-Granger’s teams at press time.
