It was a night for big innings when North Mahaska visited HLV for a South Iowa Cedar League baseball tilt Friday. Six innings saw multiple runs scored and the teams accounted for a combined 19 walks and 11 hit batsmen. North Mahaska scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to win 18-17.
North Mahaska (2-2) scored three runs in the top of the first, four in the second and a run in the top of the third to build an 8-0 lead. HLV rallied with five runs in the bottom of the third. NM tallied another run in the fourth then added three in the fifth to increase the lead to 12-5.
HLV scored six in their half of the fifth to cut the Warhawk lead to one. North Mahaska had a 17-12 lead going into the final inning. HLV scored five to send the game into extra frames. NM scored a run in the eighth then held the Warriors at bay for the victory.
North Mahaska pounded out 11 hits and drove in 14 runs. Tyson Ferguson led the way with two singles and four RBI. Jaxon VanDerVeer Dylan Meland rapped a double with an RBI. Jack Kelderman, Lucas Nunnikhoven and Dane Van Mersbergen each hit a single with two RBI.
Five Warhawks took the mound. Kelderman opened the night and went four innings giving up seven runs on six hits with six walks and two hit batsmen. He struck out one. Van Mersbergen closed out the night to earn thee win. He went 1 1/3 innings. He yielded one hit and walked a batter.
HLV was led at the plate by Lance Milton with two singles and five RBI. Levi Molyneux earned three RBI.
Jack Bryer pitched for the Warriors going four innings. He gave up 13 runs on seven hits, four walks, two hit batsmen and three strikeouts. Sean McCulloch finished allowing five runs on four hits with four walks, a hit batsman and one strikeout.
