North Mahaska’s softball team scored five runs in the first six innings over Montezuma, then saw the Bravettes rally for two in the top of the seventh to come within one before the Warhawks ended the game with an out to win 5-4.

North Mahaska got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Kaylia Shipman grounded out, and Regan Grewe singled to center field, each driving in one run. An error extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Montezuma tallied a run in the fourth and NM answered with one of their own. The two teams each scored a run in the sixth before the Bravettes made their final thrust.

Grewe, Kylie VanWeelden, and Addie Falb each earned one hit for North Mahaska. Cali Sampson, Grewe, and Shipman each drove in one run. Olivia Ridgeway, Falb, Lydia Howell, and Kayla Readshaw each stole multiple bases for North Mahaska. The Warhawks ran wild on the base paths, amassing 10 stolen bases for the game.

Grewe earned the win from the circle. She yielded six hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking two.

Kamryn Schmidt went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Montezuma in hits. Lily Ferry, Lauryn Larmore, and Mya Smothers each drove in one run for Montezuma.

Leah Urfer took the loss for Montezuma. The starting pitcher went six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits, striking out three and walking five.

North Mahaska improves to 6-0 on the season and will play at Colfax-Mingo Tuesday. They return home Wednesday to host Sigourney. Montezuma falls to 2-2.
