North Mahaska used the new 8-run rule to their advantage Thursday to defeat Colfax-Mingo, 8-0 in South Iowa Cedar League softball play. The Warhawks fell to No. 15 Sigourney under the same rule Wednesday.
It was Maddie Doonan’s night at the plate as she collected three hits including a home run in the fourth inning. She had doubled in the first inning, and singled in the second inning. She drove in two runs. Regan Grewe followed Doonan’s shot with a solo homer.
North Mahaska opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to Doonan’s double. Kaylia Shipman singled to drive in Doonan, then scored on Lydia Howell’s single.
In the top of the second inning, Addison Falb doubled then stole third. Olivia Ridgeway doubled to center field and Falb scored. Doonan singled to bring in Ridgeway.
Kayla Readshaw singled down the left field line following a 7-pitch at-bat after Grewe singled and Grewe came home making the score 5-0.
The fourth inning homers put the game on ice if the NM defense could hold. It held and the Warhawks walked off the field.
Jolan Fogle picked up the win going four innings. She allowed a hit and walked four with three strikeouts. Kahlen Pothoven tossed the final inning allowing two hits and a walk.
Katelyn Steenhoek, Brooklyn Yanske, and Emily Cook each had one hit for Colfax-Mingo.
Yanske took the loss for Colfax-Mingo. She went five innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits, striking out three and walking none.
North Mahaska improved to 6-1on the season. They travel to Pekin on Saturday for a varsity doubleheader at 9:30 a.m.
