North Mahaska rallied from a 4-3 deficit to upend rival Montezuma, 7-4 on Monday. North Mahaska opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two singles. Olivia Ridgeway, Maddie Doonan and Regan Grewe singled with Ridgeway and Doonan scoring.

Not to be outdone, Montezuma jumped into the lead in the bottom of the first when Emma Snook singled and advanced to second on the throw. Ellen Cook reached on an error and advanced to third scoring Snook. With two out, Kamryn Schmidt hit a two-run homerun.

In the top of the fourth, Addie Falb walked and scored on Kylie VanWeelden’s double to center field to tie the game 3-3.

Montezuma took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with Sydney Burgess’ double. She scored later in the inning on a pass ball to take a lead, 4-3.

Van Weelden rapped her second hit of the game with a single in the top of the seventh. Averie DeGeest came into run for Van Weelden. Jolan Fogle singled and Cali Sampson came in to run for Fogle. Kaylia Shipman singled, scoring DeGeest, and Cali Sampson and Shipman scored on Lydia Howell’s single.

Montezuma went down in three straight batters to end the game.

Grewe earned the win for North Mahaska. The senior gave up five hits and four runs (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one. Leah Urfer took the loss for Montezuma. She went seven innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking three.

Grewe and Howell were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for North Mahaska. VanWeelden, showed the depth of the Warhawks’ lineup, by leading them with two hits in three at bats. Falb stole two bases. North Mahaska piled up four stolen bases for the game.

Schmidt led Montezuma with two runs batted in.
