Two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning was enough for the Cardinal Comets to edge North Mahaska, 3-2 in nonconference baseball play Friday. North Mahaska was limited to two singles by lead-off hitter Ryan Groom.
Matthew Blommers pithed the first 5 2/3 innings for the Comets striking out 13 NM batters. Cayden Courtney finished the game adding three more strikeouts.
Cardinal (14-8) scored a run in the bottom of the first then North Mahaska tied it with a run in the top of the fourth. The Comets tallied two in the sixth and NM answered a run in the top of the seventh but could gain no more.
Rylan Spray took the loss for North Mahaska. He went the distance allowing three runs on seven hits, a walk, two hit batsman and a strikeout.
North Mahaska (11-8) goes to BGM Monday for the final South Iowa Cedar League challenge then goes to University of Iowa Tuesday to face GMG.
