North Mahaska’s quest for a South Iowa Cedar League title may be out of reach but the Warhawks are making a run for a top three spot. They allowed a single run to HLV (1-10) and scattered four hits in a 4-1 victory Monday. NM, 9-8, will finish the conference season this week by hosting league leader Lynnville-Sully (12-4) and BGM on Friday (12-7).
North Mahaska junior Jack Kelderman struck out nine HLV Warrior batters and yielded four hits, He walked one and hit two batters. He also had one of his team’s four singles. Senior Nate Sampson hit a single to drive in two runs and junior Lucas Nunnikhoven had a single and RBI. Sophomore Jaxon Vander Veer added the team’s other single.
HLV’s Boston York hit the game’s only extra base hit with a double.
Peyton Roth took the loss for the Warriors. He went the distance allowing four runs on four hits, five walks and two hit batsmen. He struck out four.
North Mahaska hosts No. 5 Lynnville-Sully Wednesday then plays BGM for senior night in New Sharon Friday to end the conference season. They will play a triangular Saturday at Moravia facing Van Buren at noon and Moravia at 2 p.m.
